Why I use Essential Oils

Look. At. This. Face.

This little guy is my only child, and I treat him accordingly. His name is D'Artagnan (DAR-TAN-YUN) after the Three Musketeers, and he brings a smile to my face every single day. He is what helped me keep my sanity when Mr. James and I were living 5 hours apart for 9 months.

I truly love this little guy.

But, it has not all been smooth sailing. Last October, I hit an all-time low with this little man. D'Artagnan (Darty for short) had chewed a huge sore on his front forearm. His forearm chewing had started immediately after he and I moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in August. Mr. James and I had discussions at length about it, but our only conclusion was that it was the anxiety about the move. Surely it would eventually go away, right?

The day that sore appeared, I lost it. I felt like I had failed as his parent, his caregiver, his protector. I should have done something to prevent it. I shouldn't have left him at home when I was at work all day. I truly didn't know what was wrong with him, but I was certain that it was all my fault.

We promptly took Darty to the vet and were scared that the diagnosis was going to be bad parenting. The vet took one look at him and declared it was allergies. WHAAAAT?! How could he be so certain??

Well, Darty's paws had a reddish tint to them which is one of the tell-tale signs of pet allergies. You can see an example here:

Yep! There it is! The allergy culprit!!

The only combat for dog allergies was for Darty to take steroids for a month. Man, they worked like a charm. No more biting…his arm healed…and he no longer behaved like my dog. He became lethargic and no longer wanted to interact with anyone. Dang it.

The only other solution we were given by the vet was two Benadryl a day.

But Mrs. James, what does all of this have to do with essential oils?

Glad you asked! The 2x/day Benadryl continued until an amazing speech pathologist introduced me to Young Living essential oils in April. She had some outstanding success with her own family, and I was eager to try them with Darty to combat his allergies in lieu of the Benadryl. Mr. James was not completely convinced they would work, so I made a slow transition to oils-only. It took some trial and error. I assumed topical applications would be best, but he fought me hard when I tried to place oils on him. After a bit of research on the internet, I began adding the oils to a bowl, placing a little bit of local honey and crackers on top. Success!! He loves his oil combo. By the end of May, Darty's allergies were still in-check and he was only using oils, no more Benadryl!

Since then, I have used essential oils for a multitude of ailments and have even made a jump on over to Spark Naturals essential oils. In my next post, I will talk about my research and why I decided to go with Spark Naturals long-term as opposed to Young Living.
